Practical guidelines for the fabrication of Duplex stainless steels

Applications and production processes

The International Molybdenum Association (IMOA), in association with International Stainless Steel Forum and Euro Inox, has prepared a guide for the fabrication of Duplex (austeno-ferritic) stainless steels. This documents presents a panoramic on the history of Duplex stainless steels, their chemical composition, and the role of alloying elements. It then analyses corrosion resistance, end user specifications, quality control, and mechanical and physical properties for this class of stainless steels.

The document discusses the most common processes that can be carried out on these materials, as well as recommendations and critical points to be considered:

  • Cutting
  • Forming
  • Machining
  • Welding
  • Other joining techniques
  • Post-fabrication cleanup

In particular, the final chapter on the applications of Duplex stainless steels is much interesting because of its usage in harsh environments. The documents concludes with two appendixes:

  • Duplex stainless steel designations and product names
  • Summary of specifications
